Board of Directors – Designated Community Oncologist

Dr. Spigel is the chief scientific officer at Sarah Cannon Research Institute. He is a member of the ASCO-ACCC Collaboration to Increase Participation of Racial & Ethnic Minority Populations in Cancer, past chair of the Annual Meeting Education Committee and past member of the Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee and Health Services Committee in addition to other volunteer appointments.

Why do you want to serve on the ASCO Board of Directors?

Serving on the ASCO Board would offer a tremendous opportunity to help strengthen cancer care in the community. Community care is increasingly challenged by rising costs, reimbursement, and workforce supply; subspecialization in practice; access to new therapies; and the pace of research and innovation. Simply keeping up with knowledge and how to obtain and apply breakthroughs in science in busy clinics is formidable. ASCO serves many important roles in community care influencing public policy, addressing access to care, establishing guidelines, and helping to advance education and research.  Board service would allow me the opportunity to bring firsthand experience to these roles and help impact solutions and develop new ideas.
