Cancer Care and Reproductive Health Resources for the Oncology Community

August 16, 2022

On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court announced its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, effectively eliminating the constitutional right to abortion and returning the power to regulate reproductive health to individual states. Some states have already taken action to restrict or ban access to abortion services, which could have a significant impact on patients with cancer.

To help our members navigate this change and preserve their patients’ access to the highest quality cancer care, the Association for Clinical Oncology (the Association) and its affiliate, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (the Society) have developed and compiled resources related to reproductive health in patients with cancer. These resources are intended to equip members to better understand the laws in their own states and provide tools to advocate for access to all of the components of evidence-based, high-quality cancer care.

This page will be updated as more resources are available. Please contact grassroots@asco.org with any questions.

Issue Brief on Reproductive Health and Cancer Care: The Association for Clinical Oncology, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society have collaborated to develop a new issue brief that provides background on reproductive health, including medication access and fertility preservation, as it relates to cancer care. The issue brief, which is geared towards state policymakers, also outlines the organizations’ advocacy principles and priorities related to these issues.

Fertility Preservation Policy Brief: The American Society of Clinical Oncology issued a policy brief outlining the Society’s support for access to fertility preservation for patients with cancer.

State Map of Abortion Access: This third-party resource from KFF provides a map visualizing how each state is implementing laws related to abortion.

Statement from the American Society of Clinical Oncology on the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision: A statement from the Society to its members issued on June 27, 2022 about the Supreme Court decision.
