On October 13, 2022, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar extended the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) declaration, on the day it was set to expire, for an additional 90 days. The PHE is now set to expire January 13, 2023.
During the PHE the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) temporarily approved a number of telehealth flexibilities. Furthermore, through the Consolidated Appropriations Act, Congress approved a 151-day extension period for these flexibilities after the PHE expires to allow time for transition. States will also receive 60-day notice before the PHE ends.
The Association for Clinical Oncology (the Association) supports the flexibilities CMS implemented to ensure telemedicine is available to more patients and practitioners during the PHE. The Association has been urging Congress to make those expanded telemedicine policies permanent after the expiration of the PHE.
