Thank You to the Volunteers Advocating for Cancer Care at Home

December 6, 2022

The Association for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) provides multiple opportunities and platforms for its volunteers to engage in advocacy with their Members of Congress, including the ACT Network, the ASCO Advocacy Summit and Week of Action, and the Advocacy at Home Program.

The Advocacy at Home Program is a critical tool that ASCO and its volunteer advocates rely on year-round to connect, cultivate, and maintain relationships with Members of Congress. Volunteers who participate in the Advocacy at Home Program engage in one-on-one meetings with lawmaker (or members of the lawmakers staff), in their home districts, to discuss cancer policy priorities.

In 2022, ASCO volunteers have held 14 Advocacy at Home meetings. Thank you to this year’s volunteers:

  • Dr. John Deeken - Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA-8)
  • Dr. Marilyn Heine - Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-1)
  • Dr. Carolyn Hendricks - Rep. John Joyce (R-PA-13)
  • Dr. Jasmine Kamboj – Rep. Thomas Tiffany (R-WI-7)
  • Dr. Randy Kimple – Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI)
  • Dr. Christopher Lieu – Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO-6); Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO); Sen. John Hickenlooper (D-CO)

Learn more about the advocacy at Home Program. ASCO strives to have volunteers in the program from every state. If you have any questions about the program or are interested in meeting with your lawmakers, please contact Ryan Strandlund.

“The Advocacy at Home program has allowed me to connect with my community’s lawmakers to discuss and advocate for critical issues that impact our patients and healthcare providers. These have been some of the most impactful meetings I have been able to be a part of. The program has also helped me better understand the legislative and regulatory issues that shape cancer care delivery, and I have learned a tremendous amount about the legislative process that has real-world implications for the treatment of cancer and our patients.” – Dr. Christopher Lieu
