This award was created in honor of Joseph V. Simone, MD, FASCO, to recognize an extraordinary individual who has made multiple, significant, and enduring contributions to the quality and safety of cancer care.

Dr. Simone was a visionary leader who contributed to the development of curative treatments for childhood leukemia and lymphoma, and was instrumental in the creation of ASCO’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®), among other career accomplishments.

The award is presented during the ASCO Quality Care Symposium and the recipient is highlighted in meeting publications and on the ASCO website. The recipient is invited to deliver a 30-minute lecture at the ASCO Quality Care Symposium.

The award consists of a $5,000 honorarium, a commemorative plaque, and support to the recipient to attend the ASCO Quality Care Symposium in the year the award is conferred.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, a candidate must

  • Be an ASCO member
  • Have made multiple, significant, and enduring contributions to the quality and safety of cancer care
  • Have demonstrated involvement with and contributions to innovative care models
  • Have held leadership positions, within ASCO and elsewhere
  • Be a distinguished lecturer

 

Selection

The nominees are selected by the ASCO Quality Care Symposium Planning Committee, with input from ASCO Quality of Care Committee. The Joint Special Awards Selection Committee will select the award recipient and alternate and then present them to the ASCO Board of Directors for final approval.

ASCO Board Members and Officers are not eligible to receive Special Awards from the time they are elected through the end of the calendar year in which their Board terms conclude. Joint Special Award Selection Committee members are not eligible to receive Special Awards during their service on the Committee.
