Endowed by the Walther Cancer Foundation, this award and lecture was established to recognize a distinguished lecturer and leader with multiple, significant, and enduring contributions to palliative and supportive care in oncology through the prevention, assessment and management of cancer- and treatment-related suffering.
The Walther Cancer Foundation is a private foundation that supports and promotes interdisciplinary and inter-institutional bench and clinical cancer research, with a special commitment to supportive oncology. The foundation’s goal is to help build cancer programs that provide tangible benefits by expanding the world’s scientific knowledge, by saving lives and by offering hope to patients and their families.
The award is presented during the ASCO Annual Meeting and the recipient is highlighted in ASCO Daily News, on the ASCO website and in other Annual Meeting publications. The recipient is invited to deliver a 30-minute lecture on a pertinent topic in palliative and supportive care in oncology. The lecture will be recorded with ASCO support in advance of the Annual Meeting and made available to all Annual Meeting attendees.
The award consists of a $5,000 honorarium, a commemorative plaque, and support to the recipient to attend the Annual Meeting in the year the award is conferred.

- Must be an ASCO member
- Must have made multiple, significant, and enduring contributions to the field of supportive and palliative care in oncology
- Must have demonstrated involvement with and contributions to prevention, assessment and management of cancer and treatment related suffering for patients and families effected by a diagnosis of cancer
- Must have held leadership positions, within ASCO and elsewhere
- Must have prestige/name-recognition within the arena of palliative and supportive care
- Must be an accomplished lecturer
Candidates for the award are nominated by the ASCO membership and are considered by the ASCO Joint Special Awards Selection Committee. The Committee considers all nominations as they have been submitted; recommendations are then forwarded to the Board of Directors for final approval.
ASCO Board Members and Officers are not eligible to receive Special Awards from the time they are elected through the end of the calendar year in which their Board terms conclude. Joint Special Award Selection Committee members are not eligible to receive Special Awards during their service on the Committee.
