Court Rules in Favor of Making Hospital Prices Public

July 6, 2020

The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on June 23rd upheld a Trump administration policy requiring hospitals and health insurers to publish their negotiated rates for health services. The policy, which aims to increase transparency in U.S. healthcare system, is scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2021.

The American Hospital Association (AHA) argues that the ruling violates the First Amendment by forcing hospitals and health insurers to reveal proprietary information. AHA has appealed the court’s decision and warns against the adverse effects this ruling could have on the health care system.
