ASCO established a Drug Shortages Advisory Group to assist in the development of clinical and ethical guidance. Members of the Ethical Approaches to Drug Shortages Sub Group developed guidance using ethical process principles and implementation strategies that expand on the ASCO recommendation, "Institutions should establish a working multidisciplinary utilization committee to monitor drug shortages, provide and communicate internal policies on utilization, and act as an independent arbiter to promote equitable use of drugs in short supply." ASCO offers this information for voluntary use to highlight key process principles. It does not illustrate all issues that an institution could consider in the development of its allocation policies and procedures.
