ASCO Value Framework
On May 31, 2016, an updated version of the ASCO Value Framework was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. The Value Framework assesses the value of new cancer therapies based on clinical benefit, side effects, and improvements in patient symptoms or quality of life in the context of cost. The updated framework was developed and refined by the ASCO Value in Cancer Care Task Force. It was based on a review of more than 400 comments on the conceptual value framework from a wide range of stakeholders. The ASCO Value Framework was developed primarily as a physician-guided tool to facilitate shared decision-making by patients and oncologists in selecting a high-value treatment for an individual patient.
The ASCO Value Framework is just one part of ASCO’s broader, multi-faceted effort to achieve high-quality, high-value care for all patients with cancer. Other efforts include the Patient-Centered Oncology Model, Choosing Wisely, CancerLinQ, and the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI).
