Frequently Asked Questions

Why is ASCO collecting demographic data?

ASCO is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) for the oncology profession. You can read more about our EDI goals in our Action Plan. Understanding the demographics and identities of our members and stakeholders can help us plan our programs, meet the needs of our members, and measure our progress toward our goals.

Do I have to provide this information about myself to ASCO?

No.  Questions about race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, and veteran status always include an opt-out choice such as “prefer not to say.” We realize this information is sensitive and the questions might feel intrusive. There is never a penalty if you choose not to provide the information.

What if I do not identify with any of the choices provided in the question?

ASCO develops the demographic questions and answers by referring to credible external sources and best practices, and we review them periodically to see if they should be updated.  We realize that there are many ways to describe aspects of one’s identity and we regret if the answers do not fit.  Please choose the closest answer(s) or “other.”

Can I change the information later?

Yes. You are able to sign in to your member profile and remove, change, or add answers to the demographic questions.  You may also change the answers when you renew your membership.

How will ASCO use my information?

Your personal information is only used in accordance with ASCO’s Privacy Policy and applicable law. Information you provide may be used to identify programs that may be of interest to you.  Aggregated, anonymous demographic information is used to understand the diversity and inclusiveness of ASCO’s membership, programs, and activities and to measure progress toward our goals.

How will ASCO keep my information safe?

Your individual demographic data is treated as confidential information and stored in a secure manner. Personal information that is legally protected will be handled in compliance with applicable law.  Please see ASCO’s Privacy Policy for more information.
